One of the policy prescriptions often raised to increase donation in the US is the idea of defaulting all US citizens to being registered organ donors and requiring those who wish not to donate to affirmatively remove themselves as donors.  This policy would presume all adults are automatically presumed to consent to donation after death. However, data indicates that for the US population, the current system of opt-in donation registration by individuals, honoring those registration decisions after death and offering donation to next-of-kin in the absence of registration results in better outcomes.  Listen in on this podcast of the Journal of the American Medical Association “Conversations with Dr. Bauchner” discussing the topic with New England Donor Services President and CEO Alex Glazier, co-author of the JAMA published paper Success of Opt-In Organ Donation Policy in the United States.
