A recently published peer-reviewed article in Critical Care Medicine, a journal of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, found major that Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) approached families for organ donation at the same rates, regardless of race or ethnicity. The study – which included ten OPOs from different regions of the country and representing 26 percent of all deceased donor organs recovered in the United States – is the largest and most geographically representative study ever to examine the rates at which families are approached with donation discussions. The results refute the outdated but widely circulated belief that there are lower organ donation approach rates for patients of color.
